Đề này nguyên bản dành cho Grade 5-6; đề bài giữ nguyên tiếng Anh, phần hướng dẫn có thêm lời dịch tiếng Việt, đáp án theo bảng đáp án chính thức của ban tổ chức.

Paragraph B
From his earliest years James Cook (1729–1779) wanted to be a sailor. He began as an apprentice on a large craft carrying coal from Newcastle to London. In winter he studied hard, poring over books on navigation and seamanship, and mastering the sea routes of the world as they were then known. One fact quickly struck his eye as he scrutinized the maps—how little of the vast Pacific had been chartered. Graduating from his barge to sailing ships, he eventually enlisted in the Royal Navy, where he was posted to Canada during the Seven Years War. The French had removed all landmarks from the St. Lawrence River, making navigation of the narrows almost impossible. So, Cook was sent to take soundings, and he managed to get nearly two hundred ships through safely. Without his help the siege of Quebec could not have been undertaken. His charts continued to prove remarkably accurate, and having been commended by his officers, he continued to be promoted. He proved to be a competent navigator of the Newfoundland coast, and his work so impressed the Admiralty that he was promoted to lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Given command of the Endeavor, he was ordered to Tahiti to do scientific observation of a solar eclipse. He was then ordered to explore the South Pacific, which he did till he came upon the East Coast of New Zealand which had not been explored. He discovered the strait between the north and south islands, proceeded in the direction of Tasmania, and reached Australia at a point he named Botany Bay because of the strange and interesting plants found there. He continually sent reports to the Royal Society, and preparations for a second voyage were made. This second voyage would lead to a full chartering of the South Pacific in a voyage that lasted over a thousand days and was noteworthy for the conquering of scurvy, a disease that for centuries had been a bane of navigators everywhere.

There is the false notion that otters destroy a large number of fish. This is not true. The favorite food of the otter is the crayfish. As it turns out, crayfish feed extensively on young fish. Therefore, the otter, because it eats the crayfish, actually helps to protect fish. The otter also enjoys frogs, snakes, turtles, insects, worms, and some fruits and vegetables. Both young and adult otters are active, playful creatures. Mother otters are very good parents. The newborn babies do not open their eyes until the twenty-fifth to thirty-fifth day. Around the eighty-fifth day the baby otter begins playing around the edge of the water. When the baby is about one hundred days old, it starts to be treated like an adult. The father otter does not live in the den with the mother and babies. He does, however, stay nearby. When the young do come out of the nest, the father will join them and will help teach them to swim. Most otters enjoy sliding. They climb to the top of the hill, then slide their way down. The otter has a very strong tail that is useful to help it balance upright so that it can periscope the landscape.
