Both in Great Britain and France the building and arming of ships for the Confederacy became all-important. At the beginning of the Civil War (1861–1865), Norfolk was the only yard in the South capable of building large ships, and after the loss of Norfolk it was necessary to rely entirely upon foreign shipbuilders. In both countries the law forbade the building of warships, but it was usually ignored. In the mid-nineteenth century there was really little difference in construction between merchant and naval vessels. A ship built for a civilian purpose might easily be armed with weapons at sea. This was the case of the famous ship Alabama built at Liverpool and completed in July, 1862. The Union Government presented convincing evidence that the Alabama was intended for use as a Confederate warship. The British Government ordered its detention, but the Alabama had already sailed. From then on it would become one of the most important commerce raiders against Northern shipping. Over nearly two years the Alabama sank one Union warship and sixty-two merchant ships. There were great shipping losses. Also, the fear inspired caused the North to transfer much trade to British ships and register many American ships under the British flag. After the war the Alabama was the center of a long, drawn-out argument with the British, which was not ended until American claims were settled by arbitration in 1872.

Paragraph C

Cats first appeared in Egyptian drawings dating from 2600 B.C. These animals were worshipped as deities by the ancient Egyptians and lived in temples and were fed like kings. At death the cats of Egypt were embalmed and placed in sacred tombs. There are many stories told about cats. One of the most famous comes to us from the sixteenth century. Sir Henry Wyat, a famous English statesman, was arrested and thrown into prison. He was given no food. He would have starved had his cat not accompanied him to the jail, caught pigeons, and brought them to him to eat. Another story is told stating that Mohammed is said to have cut off the sleeve of his robe rather than disturb his favorite cat who was sitting on it. It is also documented that a $100,000 legacy was left to Buster, a mongrel cat, by an attorney in Boston. Eli Whitney supposedly got the idea for the creation of the cotton gin because he watched a hungry cat catch a chicken in a pen and pull its feathers through the cracks. The cat is an independent creature who has intrigued people through the centuries. The creature that is a favorite today is essentially the same animal that accepted the homage of Egyptians ages ago.
