Passage B

Although most Americans are probably familiar with the Gettysburg Address, many do not know the importance of the Battle of Gettysburg or the specifics of that battle. The battle had taken place during the first three days of July in 1863 in a Pennsylvania town of 2,400 people. Weeks later most of the buildings in the town had become makeshift hospitals, and there were still many unburied bodies. It is said that the North suffered 23,000 losses, or one quarter of its army; the South suffered about 28,000 casualties, or one third of its army. That November when Lincoln dedicated a national cemetery there, he offered in his speech that “we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain.”

In the summer of 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee had taken his troops to surprise the North on its own territory. He did not have a specific plan to fight at Gettysburg, but a group of Confederate soldiers went into the town on June 30 to look for shoes. There they encountered some Union cavalry. It is then that the two groups prepared for battle. On July 1 the Confederates won and pushed the Union forces out of the town. Gettysburg was in a shallow valley surrounded by ridges, and the North set up camp that night in the hills above the town. The South set up camp about one mile away. On July 2 a Confederate attack failed, but there were heavy casualties on both sides. On the final day of the battle, Robert E. Lee had one of his officers, George E. Pickett, lead a charge of about 15,000 men against the Union. They advanced over three quarters of a mile and up Cemetery Hill. The men marched in a formation one-mile wide and a half-a-mile deep. However, because of the Union’s advantage on the hill, the Confederates could not break through. Lee was forced to retreat.

Passage C

John Steinbeck (1902–1968) was one of the most honored writers of the twentieth century. He received a Pulitzer Prize for literary excellence in 1939 for his novel The Grapes of Wrath, and he received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962. Born in California, he spent much of his life in that state and set many of his stories there. Although he did not get a degree, he studied at Stanford University. His major course work was in science, especially marine biology. However, he also enjoyed writing, and he moved to New York and became a newspaper reporter. Steinbeck was always concerned for his fellow humans, and too often he allowed his opinions and ideas into the news stories he reported. Eventually he was fired for this tendency. When he returned to California, he held a variety of jobs, including fruit picker, chemist, and fisherman. Later Steinbeck would use the people he met in these jobs, as well as the jobs themselves, in his writings.

Steinbeck experimented with short stories, plays, novellas, novels, and nonfiction. He published his first novel in 1929; he continued writing, but his first three books were not very successful. In 1935, however, his novel Tortilla Flat brought him literary and financial success. Later The Grapes of Wrath became a true literary sensation. It captured the pulse of its time with the story of a family evicted from its Oklahoma farm during the Depression and Dust Bowl. The Joads traveled to California hoping to find a land of milk and honey. Steinbeck’s story of the family’s failure to find the American dream is often spoken of as exposing man’s inhumanity to man. Many of his other works had similar themes. While some criticize Steinbeck’s works as focusing on grim aspects of life and the outcasts of society, many others applaud his celebration of the simple joys in life, the wonders of nature, and man’s capacity for greatness even in humble surroundings.
