Đề này nguyên bản dành cho Grade 5-6; đề bài giữ nguyên tiếng Anh, phần hướng dẫn có thêm lời dịch tiếng Việt, đáp án theo bảng đáp án chính thức của ban tổ chức.

Paragraph B
The Felix the Cat comic strip began in 1919. It appeared in more than sixty newspapers around the world. Otto Messmer, through the Sullivan Studio, devised and directed silent film that gave Felix his individuality. Felix was the first animated character in a film series to have a unique personality. He was feisty, with facial expressions that made him seem real. One mannerism, pacing with his hands behind his back while thinking, became a trademark. In 1927 over fifteen thousand Midwestern children entered a Felix the Cat drawing contest. In England Felix was made mascot for a British polo team, and Queen Mary brought a model of Felix home to King George. Felix, however, lost popularity when Walt Disney perfected the sound film. Disney's films made a mouse more popular than a cat. Mickey Mouse, because he could be heard, put the silent Felix in a back space. There was a revival of Felix the Cat on a television series in 1959. There is today a variety of objects that still honors Felix the Cat. Dolls, greeting cards, watches, and other merchandise can be purchased. The famous black-and-white cat with a cranial bulge and big round eyes on top of a small body has stimulated affection and joy for over seventy years.

Mary Roberts Rinehart, known for such mystery works as The Circular Staircase (1908), entered nurses training at seventeen. She worked with the unfortunate and thereby learned compassion for the weak and sick. She also learned about lethal weapons, criminals, and victims. She later began writing for The Saturday Evening Post and during World War I was sent overseas to be a correspondent. Mary Roberts Rinehart was one of the first women to serve in that profession. She also did undercover work as she toured Army camps. As she did this work, she continued to write mystery stories. She was so involved in this genre that she was often asked by newspapers to write her conclusions about actual crimes that had occurred.
When her novel writing became her main job, she was systematic. She worked at her desk from ten o'clock in the morning until three in the afternoon. On a good day she wrote about four thousand words. On a slow day she wrote about two thousand words. Mary Roberts Rinehart was a busy and courageous woman. All her life she battled ill health. She had numerous operations, and one of these was for cancer. She wrote openly about mastectomy for the American Cancer Society. She urged women to early discovery of the disease and encouraged those who had to face the disease to be brave. This woman lived until she was eighty-two. She wrote about fifty-five books and many articles. Besides the mysteries she wrote travel books and two works about World War I. She is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
