Carl Sandburg was born in 1878. He came from a Swedish immigrant family and lived in Galesburg, Illinois. He had irregular schooling and as a youth was a wandering laborer in the Middle West. During the Spanish-American War he was a soldier and was stationed in Puerto Rico. He loved ordinary people and commonplace things. He was unknown as a poet until 1914, when Poetry magazine published some of his works. Among these short pieces was “Chicago,” which led him to be a leading figure in a new group of authors that was beginning to flourish. The People, Yes tells in verse about the American spirit as seen in folk history. This work shows Sandburg's social sympathies and his faith and belief in the working classes and their future. His Complete Poems was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Besides his poetry and journalism he devoted much time to careful research of his work about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War years. And he kept expanding his interests. Always the Young Strangers is about his early youth. From this work he created a children's work called Prairie Town Boy.

Passage C
Suleiman I, “the Magnificent,” (1494–1566) was the Ottoman Turk sultan who ruled from 1520, when Ottoman power was at its zenith. Lord of the realms of the Romans, the Persians, and the Arabs, his empire stretched from North Africa to the Middle East. Suleiman succeeded his father, Selim “the Grim,” on October 1, 1520. At first the Christian West welcomed the accession of a man renowned as a scholar. But never would the Ottoman empire be as admired or feared as under Suleiman. He inherited a superb military machine, which worked because, unlike Western European armies of the time, the forces were promptly paid and supported by a superb administration. He could put an army of 100,000 into the field centered on the professional corps of janissaries, Christian-born men from the Balkans, carefully selected and superbly trained, particularly in military engineering.
He was also helped by the schism in the Christian church, which coincided with his accession. Unlike Selim, who had directed Ottoman expansion east and south, Suleiman sensed it was time to move west. He began his campaign against the Christian powers in Central Europe and the Mediterranean. Belgrade fell to him in 1521 and Rhodes, long under the rule of the Knights of St. John, in 1522. The knights withdrew to Malta in 1523. In 1526 Suleiman defeated an attack by the Hungarian army at Mohacs and captured Buda but delayed the formal annexation of Hungary for twenty years, allowing the Hungarians to squabble among themselves. In 1532 he met his match in the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain, Charles V. The Ottoman army was held up unexpectedly by the stubborn resistance of imperial forces 70 miles southeast of Vienna, and Charles did not make the mistake of moving out to meet the Ottomans as the Hungarians had.
The Ottoman army possessed some of the world's most powerful artillery but still preferred the bow to the muskets now becoming dominant in Western European armies. Suleiman's last campaign in 1566 was another incursion into Habsburg territory with the largest army he had ever assembled. But on September 7 he died in his tent among his troops, whom he had led with such grandeur.
