Paragraph B
The election of 1800 involved the first peaceful transfer of power between political parties and marked the first of two instances in which the president was elected by the House of Representatives. The Democratic-Republicans, led by Thomas Jefferson, succeeded Federalists, led by incumbent President John Adams. The system did not provide for separate ballots for president and vice-president, and when the Democratic-Republican electors divided evenly between Jefferson and Aaron Burr, a tie resulted. The election for president was thrown to the House, where each state received one vote. The House, still controlled by a partisan Federalist majority (there were 106 members—58 Federalists and 48 Democratic-Republicans), was to decide the presidency, even though the incoming House was controlled by the other party. On the first ballot Jefferson received the votes of eight states, one short of the majority of the sixteen states in the Union at the time. Six states backed Burr, but the representatives of Vermont and Maryland were equally divided, so their states lost their votes. On the first day, February 11, 1801, nineteen tie ballots were cast. A total of thirty-six ballots was taken before the House broke the deadlock. On February 17 Vermont and Maryland finally supported Jefferson, and Delaware and South Carolina withdrew their support from Burr, casting blank votes. The final results were ten states for Jefferson and four for Burr. So Jefferson was elected the third president and Burr automatically became vice-president. The Jefferson-Burr deadlock proved that the method of electoral voting was inefficient and resulted in the Twelfth Amendment, by which each elector cast one vote for president and the other for vice-president.

Paragraph C
The Battle of Saratoga has been considered the major turning point of the American Revolution. The battle proved to the world that America could develop a strong fighting force that could defeat the more highly trained British forces. As a result of this successful battle, the European powers, particularly the French, took an interest in the cause of the Americans. Support began to increase rapidly. In the British campaign of 1777 General Burgoyne planned a three-column advance to meet in Albany, New York. He led the main column, which moved southward along the Hudson River. A second column was to serve as a diversionary attack, moving eastward from Canada along the Mohawk River. General Howe was expected to direct the third part of the attack. According to the plan General Henry Clinton would move northward along the Hudson River and join up with Burgoyne in Albany. Through this campaign the British hoped to isolate and destroy the Continental forces of New England.
At first the British plan appeared to be working with a British victory at Ticonderoga. Burgoyne's army continually pushed back the Americans southward along the Hudson River with only minor casualties. The Battle of Bennington marked the first significant American victory when the American militia triumphed against a British resupply expedition. A large force of a thousand men under General Benedict Arnold attempted to further slow the British advance. Skirmishes occurred all along the Mohawk River leading up to the climactic Battle of Saratoga.
During the First Battle of Saratoga, fought September 19, 1777, the American forces lost ground to General Burgoyne's army. Also, disagreements in tactics and differences in personalities led to a heated argument between the commander, General Horatio Gates, and Arnold, who was relieved of command. The Battle of Bemis Heights was the second battle of Saratoga, taking place October 7, when Burgoyne desperately attacked Continental defenses with his tired, demoralized army. At Bemis Heights Gates' defensive tactics insured a tactical victory for the Americans. Moreover, they saw an opportunity to seize the offensive while Burgoyne was vulnerable and led a counterattack. This bold move so badly wounded the British forces that Burgoyne surrendered days later at Saratoga.
