Isaac Newton was born in 1642 into a world that was seeing the beginnings of a scientific revolution. New discoveries were being made, and the classical version of how the world operated was being reviewed. Newton would become a pioneer in the new scientific method of careful observation and experimentation that would be backed up by mathematics.

When Newton was eighteen, new scientific discoveries inspired him to begin to evaluate established knowledge using tests, experiments, and mathematical proofs. In 1664 he performed his first serious scientific research on prisms. He knew that a prism produced a rainbow. However, he wanted to understand how white light separated into the spectrum of colors.

A plague closed the university where Newton studied in 1665, but he continued his research at home for two years. The most famous story from this time (although some say it is not completely true) was of Newton's thinking about the movement of the planets and moon while under an apple tree. When an apple fell, he wondered if the same force that pulled the apple down might also hold the moon and planets in their courses. Whether this story is true or not, it is known that Newton did allow everyday events to inspire his thinking. This led to work that unlocked some of the fundamental laws of the universe. For the next twenty years, Newton pursued his ideas that led to his explanation of the laws of gravity and motion. He made complicated calculations to prove his theories. In the process he developed a new mathematical system that today is called calculus.

Many people of his time did not appreciate Newton's ideas. However, his practical inventions, like his new type of telescope, caused a sensation. With this he became famous and was asked to join the Royal Society of London. He was not yet thirty years old. Throughout his life Newton pursued many theories. Although some were more successful than others, he persisted in his work. In 1705 he was knighted and became Sir Isaac Newton. He was the first scientist to have this honor. He died at eighty-four in 1727. Over his lifetime Newton had come to be seen as the explainer of the universe.

When I come up to bat,
I know that I will freeze.
Why do I always feel
So weak around my knees?

The score is tied, one to one,
With two runners on base.
But there are two outs
And I'm afraid I'll lose face.

My teammates are cheering.
Don't they see my legs quake?
I don't want to be here,
I could surely use a break.

Pitch one is a bomb
That I hardly see.
I swing my bat late,
There's no mercy for me.

Pitch two is next.
I hold my bat tight.
But the ball whizzes by,
That didn't work right.

As I hunker down,
I stare at my foe.
Pitch three is released,
And I let my bat go.

Yelling and screaming rise in my ears
As I see my ball soar.
I rush round the bases
And hear the crowd roar.

What? Home run? And three runners in?
Is this really me? I helped us win?
As I cross home plate, I hear the crowd cheer.
And so all along I had nothing to fear?

Helen Keller shattered people's ideas of what a blind and deaf person could accomplish. When she was born in 1880, she could see and hear. However, a grave illness when she was nineteen months old left her without sight or hearing. Living in a dark and silent world, Keller did not understand the world around her, and she did not learn to speak. When Keller was seven, the twenty-year-old Annie Sullivan came to live with the family and teach Helen. Sullivan had been blind as a child, and she had learned braille, a method for blind people to read and write using raised dots for letters of the alphabet. She had also learned American Sign Language, or ASL, a method of making finger and hand signals that allowed deaf people to understand words. Later Sullivan's sight was restored through operations, and she hoped to help Keller. Sullivan began to spell words for Helen using sign language. Helen was quick to spell and to remember words like doll, but she did not attach meaning to them. Her famous breakthrough came when she realized that the hand spelling of water meant the wet liquid she could feel. Keller became eager to learn the names for everything. She wanted to understand the world and be able to express herself.

At eight Keller went to a school for the blind with Sullivan to learn braille. Already fascinated with words, she learned quickly and soon enjoyed stories and books. With a braille typewriter she could write. When she was ten, another teacher helped her to learn to speak with her mouth not just her hands. Keller would feel the lips and throat of the teacher and try to copy words. She also learned to read lips by touching a speaker. Attending a school for the deaf helped her to improve her speech and lipreading. Next Keller and Sullivan went to a college prep school, and Helen set a new goal—to attend college. Although not too many women of the time went to college, Keller entered the prestigious Radcliffe College in 1900. She later graduated with honors.

While Keller was in college, a magazine asked her to write articles about her life. These were published monthly and later turned into a book. The articles and book made Helen famous. People wanted to see and hear her speak. With Sullivan she traveled the United States and the world giving speeches. She also gave hope to many as people saw that someone who lost two senses could still do almost anything. Keller liked to dance and go to concerts. She would enjoy the vibrations of the music. She also liked to garden and used her senses of touch and smell to know her plants. By the time that Keller died at age eighty-seven, she had been around the world nine times. She had also met with every American president from Grover Cleveland in the late 1880's to John F. Kennedy in the 1960's.
