Samurai were a caste or class of soldiers in Japan that came into being in the late 1100's. They existed as a separate group until the late 1800's. Their name means "those who serve." Samurai had high status as warriors who lived a life based on loyalty, courage, and strength. Samurai were paid to protect the lands of the wealthy in Japan. They insisted on strict discipline and would prefer to die rather than surrender to an enemy.
Samurai were brilliant soldiers. They were expected to be skillful with many weapons, especially their long swords, spears, and bows and arrows. Other weapons included weighted chains, daggers, star-shaped blades for throwing, staffs or long poles, and staffs with blades. Later they also used guns. Besides practicing with weapons, they also developed skills in unarmed combat. Samurai developed fighting skills on horseback and as foot soldiers. They also developed very special garments to protect themselves in battle. Their armor was made of small iron pieces tied together with leather or silk. Four main garments included their helmet, a neck guard, shoulder plates, and a left arm guard. Their right arm was unprotected so they could more easily use weapons. Before a battle a samurai would often burn incense in his helmet so that if his head were cut off it would smell good. Samurai were proud warriors.

Section C
Octopuses are predators—they hunt and kill other animals to eat. An octopus has a rounded body with eight arms, and most octopuses have suckers on their arms. These help them catch and hold their prey while they kill and eat them. Their jaws resemble a bird's sharp beak. When they bite their prey, most of them inject poisonous saliva to paralyze their catch. If the prey has a shell, like a clam, the octopus will drill a hole and inject the saliva to poison it. Then it will open the clam and eat the soft inside.
The octopus itself is also preyed upon. Some of the same things that it uses to catch food it also uses to prevent itself from being food for another animal. An octopus is very good at camouflage. It can easily and quickly change colors to blend into its setting because of the many dots of color in its skin. It can make the dots get bigger and smaller and even make them turn bright colors to scare away another animal. Also, an octopus can change its whole shape to appear bigger. Another interesting feature of many octopuses is their ability to squirt out a dark liquid called ink that allows them to swim away quickly behind their ink cloud. Perhaps the most amazing defense for some octopuses is their ability to break off an arm when attacked. That arm can continue to move and change colors, confusing a predator while the octopus swims away. Even more amazingly, the octopus will then grow a new arm.
