Section A

Although many of us call a star-shaped sea creature a starfish, it is really not a fish at all. In fact, its real name is a sea star. It has no head, but it does have a flat body with a center that is called a disk. On its underside in the middle it has a mouth. Its body is based on a five-point star shape. Many sea stars do have five arms, but some of them have as many as forty arms. Underneath its skin it does have a skeleton that is made up of smaller plates that join together. These allow the sea star to bend and move.

A very special feature of the sea star is its tube feet. These run in rows along the bottom of the arms. They are small tubes that fill with water to help in motion and gathering food. They are filled with water and go out through holes in the skeleton. When filled with more water, they can stretch quite far. They become shorter when water is released. Some sea stars that live on hard surfaces have suckers on their tube feet to help to grip. Others that live on soft ground have pointed tips at the ends to find buried food.

Sea stars have two different ways of producing new sea stars. In one way a young sea star begins life as a larva that does not look like its parents. Then, after a few months it slowly begins to change. Much like a tadpole that becomes a frog, the larva becomes a sea star. In a more unusual way, a single adult sea star can break into two parts to form two sea stars. Each part has to have a piece of the center or disk, but it does not have to be the same size. Over time the two parts will develop the pieces of their bodies that they are missing. As they grow, sometimes they will be identical to the original sea star, and sometimes they will develop more arms than their parent.

I guess I won't freeze.

One more step down.
I'll do the next fast.
Not so bad yet.
The bottom is last.

Up to my waist!
The water feels okay.
Should I go to my shoulders?
Or jump in all the way?

I hold my breath tightly
And plunge into the pool.

Why've I been such a fool?

Wow! This is wonderful!
Next time I'll just dive.
The sparkling water
Makes me feel so alive!

Long ago a Hebrew leader named Moses led his people to freedom. In the United States there was someone people called the Black Moses. Her name was Harriet Tubman, and she was born when black people were often slaves. Even though she was very small, her owner sent her to work for a neighbor when she was only six or seven. She had a very hard life and was often beaten. As she got older, she heard of slaves who escaped to freedom in the North, where there was no slavery. Harriet dreamed that she could be free.

Later Harriet heard of something called the Underground Railroad. This was not a real railroad. It was a system of places called stations, where blacks could be safe on their way to the North. There were also conductors who knew the way to travel. They led passengers, or groups of slaves, toward the North. Harriet began to think of escaping. Her father had taught her how to survive in the woods and how to tell direction. She knew to follow the North Star in the sky to go north. If there were no stars, she knew that moss grew on the north side of a tree. She knew too that dogs could not follow her scent if she went in a river.

One day Harriet left her home and escaped alone. She was able to find a station on the Underground Railroad. Then she found the next and the next until she got to the North and was free. Harriet was happy being free, but she wanted to help others to be free, too.

Soon she was going back into slave country to help others escape. She used all that she knew to help them using the Underground Railroad. She rescued most of her family, including her parents.
