Passage A
One of the oddest looking animals you will ever see is the saiga. About the size of a large dog, the saiga has a small body with short legs, a large nose, and a short tail. The saiga lives in grasslands and desert areas in parts of Asia where the summers are dry and dusty and the winters are cold. The ball-shaped nose of the saiga helps to filter the dust in the summer and warm the air it breathes in the winter. It also removes water vapor from the air as it exhales, keeping the water in its body. The fur of a saiga is soft underneath, coarse and bristly on top, and turns whiter and thicker in the winter. This helps protect it from the cold. The male saiga has shiny horns on its head that are 12 to 14 inches long, which it uses to protect the many female saigas that live with him.
Female saigas usually give birth to two babies, called calves, each year. After the baby is born, the mother conceals it for the first few days so predators can't see it. It grazes and drinks its mother's milk for four months before joining the herd. Saigas have a poor sense of hearing, but they have excellent eyesight. They move in large herds, looking for food and water and fleeing from hungry wolves. They eat a variety of plants and grasses and can travel up to 70 miles in one day. When they are in danger, the entire herd will start running, reaching speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Adult saigas can usually outrun the other animals that are chasing them, but the babies are often caught.
Saigas have always been hunted for their meat and skins, but their constant traveling over highways and canals is what puts them in greatest danger. Another problem saigas face is that people kill them for their horns, believing that there is medicine in them. Because of all these dangers saigas are becoming extinct. Many people, however, are working to save the few remaining saigas. In some areas armed rangers have been hired to protect them, and conservationists are trying to teach people that the saiga must be saved. They have created a large preserve to protect the saiga's home and make a safe place for the babies to be born. If these efforts do not work, saigas may soon be found only in zoos.

Passage C
Not too many people know about Garrett Morgan, but this African-American inventor improved the lives of everyone who ever drove on a big road or crossed a busy street. You may take the traffic light he invented for granted, but imagine what it would be like if we never had it. Born in 1877 to former slaves, Morgan spent his early childhood going to schools and working on the family farm. As a teenager he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, to work for a clothing manufacturer as a sewing machine repairman. Soon his reputation for being able to fix anything became well known, and Morgan received many opportunities for work. He was always experimenting with gadgets and machines and tried to find ways to improve them. If there was a better way to make something, Garrett Morgan would find it.
By 1907 Garrett Morgan had started his own sewing-equipment and repair shop. The business grew, and within two years he had thirty-two people working for him, making coats, suits, and dresses. Most of the machines used in his business were invented by Morgan himself. He didn't stop there, though. In 1912 he invented a safety- and smoke-protector hood, which won him a gold medal from the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Four years later the hood was used by workers trying to rescue men trapped in a tunnel explosion under Lake Erie. Because of it the workers were able to rescue all the men who were trapped. News of the successful rescue brought attention to Morgan's invention, and fire departments across the country placed orders for the hood. During World War II he modified the hood so soldiers in the Army could use it as a gas mask.
To this day, though, Garrett Morgan's most important invention was the automatic traffic light. Before his invention traffic signals were controlled by people who would sometimes move the signals at the wrong time, resulting in confusion and collisions. At night there were no people to run them so going through a busy intersection was even more dangerous. The traffic light Morgan invented would stop traffic both ways while still allowing people to cross the street safely. This made it possible to control the movement of traffic in an orderly manner. His traffic signal was automatic, controlled by an electric clock mechanism. People were not needed to operate the signal. His invention quickly became popular and was used in most cities across the United States. In 1963, at the age of eighty-six, Garrett Morgan received a special citation from the United States Government for his contribution to increasing traffic safety.
