American Language League (trước năm 2024 mang tên National Language Arts League – NLAL) là kỳ thi tiếng Anh thường niên dành cho học sinh Mỹ từ lớp 1 đến lớp 12, kiểm tra từ vựng, ngữ pháp, chính tả và đọc hiểu. Đề này nguyên bản dành cho Grade 3-4; đề bài giữ nguyên tiếng Anh, phần hướng dẫn có thêm lời dịch tiếng Việt, đáp án theo bảng đáp án chính thức của ban tổ chức.

Paragraph A
The president of a country can be more than just the leader of a nation. He can be so influential that he affects the lives of his time as well as the lives of future generations. One such president was the twenty-sixth President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. The youngest president in the history of our nation, Roosevelt took office in 1901 at the age of forty-two. He served as president until 1909. He was a powerful president who was responsible for many new changes in the country. He had a strong foreign policy. Under his leadership, the Panama Canal was constructed. It provided a good shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Theodore Roosevelt believed that the United States should use its reputation and power to help keep peace in the world. In 1905 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for successfully helping to end the Russo-Japanese War. He believed in honesty, fairness, and equal rights for everyone. He was a conservationist who loved to hunt and fish. While on a hunting trip in Mississippi in 1902, Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear. When the story spread across the nation, a toy bear was created. It was named after him, and it was called the teddy bear.
During his presidency Roosevelt added 125 million acres to the national forests, established 16 national monument areas, 51 wildlife refuges, reserved huge areas of land for public use, and sponsored large irrigation projects. Until his death in 1919 Theodore Roosevelt continued to give his time and talent to his country. In addition to his many writings Roosevelt left behind a system of parks and forests, many political achievements, and a reputation for being a man of honesty, boldness, and insight.

Perhaps the world's greatest track-and-field athlete was Jesse Owens. His real name was James Cleveland Owens, and he was born on September 12, 1913, in Oakville, Alabama. As a child James enjoyed running because it was something he could do under his own power. At age nine his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in search of a better life. Cleveland was a big city, and it was racially mixed. He liked this better than his old town where blacks and whites lived separately. When he went to his new school, James told the teacher that his name was J.C. Owens, but she thought he said "Jesse" Owens. From then on he was called Jesse Owens. His coach, Charles Riley, was also his best friend. Riley taught Jesse how to work patiently and run gracefully. Jesse always tried his best, and as a junior in high school he qualified for a chance to make the 1932 U.S. Olympic team. Unfortunately, he lost both races and did not make the team. He went on to college, continued to run, and broke many world records.
At the age of twenty-two Jesse Owens realized his Olympic dream. He went to Berlin, Germany, to take part in the 1936 Summer Olympic Games. They were hosted by German leader Adolf Hitler, who was prejudiced against all other people. He claimed that Nazi Germany was the home of the master race, but Jesse showed him that this was not true. By the close of the 1936 Olympics, Jesse Owens had earned four gold medals and won the hearts of everyone. Jesse and his German competitor, Luz Long, helped and encouraged each other during their Olympic races. By the end of the games they had become good friends. They demonstrated that people from different countries and races could be friends. Together they showed the world that black and white athletes could work together and discover the best within themselves. Jesse Owens returned to America as the fastest person in the world and the first person ever to win four gold medals in Olympic competition.
