American Language League (trước năm 2024 mang tên National Language Arts League – NLAL) là kỳ thi tiếng Anh thường niên dành cho học sinh Mỹ từ lớp 1 đến lớp 12, kiểm tra từ vựng, ngữ pháp, chính tả và đọc hiểu. Đề này nguyên bản dành cho Grade 3-4; đề bài giữ nguyên tiếng Anh, phần hướng dẫn có thêm lời dịch tiếng Việt, đáp án theo bảng đáp án chính thức của ban tổ chức.

Paragraph A
Few things can match the incredible sight of an erupting volcano. Volcanoes are caused by activities deep inside the earth. Beneath the earth's crust is a layer of hot rock called the mantle. Part of the mantle is melted and forms melted rock and gases called magma. During a volcanic eruption very high pressure forces the magma up through the cracks towards the earth's surface, where it flows out as lava. Gases, steam, and ash also escape. The ashes form a cloud and fall toward the earth. There are about six hundred active volcanoes on the earth. More than half of them lie in a chain that circles the Pacific Ocean called the Ring of Fire.
People living near a volcano are in danger if it erupts. Lava burns, crushes, and buries everything in its path. Although you can run away from lava, it destroys houses and land. Towns in volcano territory build dams around the volcano to help stop lava from flowing onto houses. Although volcanoes may harm people, they can also be good for the earth. Land near volcanoes is very rich in nutrients, and the minerals in lava help plants grow. Volcanoes can even create land. If the volcano is near an ocean, hot lava pours into the water and quickly cools, and a new island is formed. The islands of Hawaii were all made from volcanic eruptions, and in the fall of 1996 a new island formed in Iceland because of a volcanic eruption.
Precious metals and diamonds come from ancient volcanic rock. Powerful pressure inside volcanic rock squeezes carbon to form diamonds. In some places people use volcanic steam to heat homes. People in Iceland get steam for heating their homes and hot water for bathing from underground volcanic hot springs. Scientists hope that radar images taken by the space shuttle Endeavour will provide clues about how volcanic eruptions affect the earth's climate.

Paragraph C
Although this Black American received very little credit for his contributions, his skill and courage made the discovery of the North Pole possible. Hero to the Eskimos, he was a valued member of the first expedition to reach the North Pole. This man was Matthew Alexander Henson. Born in Maryland on August 8, 1866, Henson was on his own by the age of thirteen. In 1879 he took a job as a cabin boy on a steamship that sailed around the world. He became a very capable seaman and learned carpentry, first aid, and other skills. The captain always encouraged him to ignore the racism of people and continue to work to improve himself. Matthew Henson took pride in his work and was always willing to take a risk to make things better.
In 1887 Henson met Robert Peary, who hired him as his personal servant. Henson was such a good worker that Peary invited him to join him on his mission to reach the North Pole. Henson's jobs on the expedition included building their living quarters, learning how to build and drive a dogsled, and getting the dogs to obey. Peary appreciated his talents and said that Henson was the best man he had on any expedition. Henson proved himself to be brave and strong. In 1909 Henson, Peary, and four Eskimos became the first people to reach the North Pole. With the American flag in his hand, Henson climbed to the top of a nearby pressure ridge, and Peary snapped his picture.
When they got home, Peary was treated like a national hero, but Henson was not recognized. Even though it was Henson's courage and intelligence that saved the expedition from disaster, no one knew. He was rarely mentioned in newspaper accounts of the expedition. Henson went on to live a long and full life until he died in 1955. It was late in his life that Matthew Henson finally received the credit he deserved. In 1954 he was invited to the White House by President Eisenhower and addressed the Explorer's Club on the forty-fifth anniversary of the discovery of the North Pole. His achievements were finally recognized, and he is remembered today as one of the bravest men to risk his life in the icy Arctic to stand on top of the world.
