Thurgood Marshall was born in 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland. Although his great-grandfather was a slave, he did not grow up during the time of slavery. However, he did grow up during the time of segregation. Blacks and whites were segregated or separated in schools, on trolley cars, buses, and trains, and at sporting events and movie theaters. Thurgood Marshall dedicated much of his life to ending segregation.

As a child Marshall became interested in the U.S. Constitution. It laid out how the government should operate. He and his father often discussed laws and went to watch trials. He enjoyed being on a debate team, and he liked the idea of fighting with words and ideas. Soon, he decided to become a lawyer. When he graduated from college, he applied to the University of Maryland Law School. He was turned down because he was an African-American. He went instead to Howard University, a black school, and graduated at the top of his class.

Marshall set up a law office in Baltimore. He often worked for the NAACP or the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Soon, he took the case of another black man, Murray, who was denied entrance into the University of Maryland's Law School. At that time the country followed a Supreme Court decision of 1896 that said that the government could provide "separate but equal" facilities for whites and blacks. Marshall argued that since Maryland only had one law school, the man was denied an equal education. Marshall won his case and then began to fight to end school segregation in other states and at other levels of education.

Later, Marshall took on a famous case that would go to the Supreme Court. In arguing the case of a black girl who could not attend the school near her home because it was all white, Marshall said that "equal" meant "getting the same thing, at the same time, in the same place." In 1954 the Supreme Court voted that school segregation was unconstitutional. The decision said "it hurt the hearts and minds of black children." This case inspired many more legal fights to end segregation in other schools, in public places, and in transportation.

Marshall himself went on to many more cases. He became a federal judge, a lawyer for the government, and eventually one of the nine justices on the United States Supreme Court. He was the first African-American to achieve this, and he earned a reputation as a supporter of fair treatment for all.

Section B

When the sun is going down
I'll try to hitch a ride
By hopping on a cloud
And into space I'll glide

Then I'll look to make a plan
To jump from star to star
I'll be above the earth
And look at it from afar

I'll gaze down on the mountains
I'll marvel at the seas
Then look for other wonders
That certainly will please

When the stars are brightly twinkling
I'll hum a special tune
I'll leap from star to star
And hopscotch to the moon

I'll watch the nighttime marvels
Till the moon begins to set
Then I'll hop right off on earth
From a trip I won't forget

Can you imagine a hospital where insects and rodents were common and where overcrowding and filth were normal? Florence Nightingale, who lived from 1820 to 1910, was shocked by such conditions in her country, Great Britain. She was inspired to spend her life changing these conditions by working as a nurse or caregiver. Her wealthy family would not consider this for her, since nursing was not considered a respectable profession. At the time most nurses were uneducated and untrained. Headstrong, Nightingale went to Germany and trained. Eventually, she came back to London and worked to make a small hospital a model of a well-run medical facility.

In 1854 Great Britain went to war with Russia. Nightingale went with thirty-eight nurses and nuns to the war front. She was shocked at the conditions in the hospital. There were few supplies, and the wounded often lay on the floor in filthy conditions. At first many in the British army were not happy with the nurses. They did not want them near the soldiers. Nightingale won them over, however, with her strict rules for training, dress code, and behavior. Her ideas became the basis for a nursing education. In the army hospital, Nightingale worked up to twenty hours a day. Soon, she was put in charge of all supplies and had carefully organized the care given by her staff. At night she would walk through the wards with a lantern offering comfort to the wounded. She became famous as "The Lady with the Lamp." The patients loved her, and her reputation spread to England and the world. Queen Victoria thanked her for her work and called her "The Angel of Mercy."

After the war Nightingale used her new fame to continue to reform hospitals. She founded the Nightingale School for Nursing in London. This was the first school to offer professional nursing training. She also collected facts and numbers to prove that more people died from diseases than from their wounds in hospitals. Slowly, she convinced others of the need for reform. At a time when many women were not given an opportunity for a profession, Nightingale inspired many to enter the field of nursing. In pursuing her own dream, she helped improve medical care for her era.
