Paragraph A
The spotted leopard, the snowshoe hare, the chameleon, and the coral snake all have something in common. They use camouflage to hide themselves. But what is camouflage, and how do animals use it? Camouflage is the act of changing your appearance. Animals use camouflage for many reasons. They use color, pattern, or shape to hide from people and from other animals. Camouflage helps them to feel safe in their environment. Camouflage can help animals to search for food without being noticed, and it can be used to hide animals from their enemies.
Many animals use different kinds of camouflage. Color is one way animals use camouflage. They conceal themselves by changing the color of their bodies. When they change color they blend in with their surroundings and can't be seen easily. A chameleon can change its skin color from green to dark brown to orange. The snowshoe hare has white fur in the winter that conceals it in the snow.
Disguise is another type of camouflage. Some animals can disguise their appearance to look like an object, such as a stone, or twig, or leaf. This makes it difficult for their enemies to find them. The spotted leopard uses disguise by changing the spots on its skin. After its black spots break up their shape, they blend together into one color. This makes it difficult for other animals to find the leopard.

Paragraph B
Thunder roared through the night
like a lion in a jungle,
Breaking the silence of my sleep.
Dark clouds in the night sky
began to reshape themselves and
Hover over the mountains deep.
Wind began to whistle softly
through the trees along the hills,
With a steady, humming sound.
Slowly, the clouds began to release
small puffs of white flakes like
Freshly popped corn falling to the ground.
Then in no particular pattern,
the flakes lazily made their way
To the trees and grass below.
What started as a quiet fear
turned to excitement as I
Witnessed this newly fallen snow.
Soon the wind grew stronger
and trees began to sway;
Branches began to bend with the weight.
A huge, white blanket covered
as far as the eye could see,
As daybreak came and the night grew late.
The soft, white ground swelled
with huge drifts that created
A new landscape of this first snowfall.
The world outside my window
suddenly became just like
A beautiful picture on the wall.

Paragraph C
Seven out of every 100 people in the United States are deaf or hearing impaired. When you are deaf in a hearing world you must hear with your eyes and speak without words. Many deaf people communicate with sign language. Sign language is made up of hand shapes and movements. It is the expressive language used by deaf and hearing-impaired people. Sign language is easy to learn, and it can help people who can hear communicate with those who cannot. With it, you can "talk" with your hands and "hear" with your eyes. Most people learn sign language because they are deaf, and others learn because they know someone who is deaf.
The person who made this possible was a man named Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. Born on December 10, 1787, he grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. As a youngster, Gallaudet was a good student. He was a very determined child who knew that he would someday do something important. Even though he was sickly and couldn't keep up with the other children, he never gave up. He had a brilliant mind and wanted to make the world better. In 1802, Thomas Gallaudet left his home to attend Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. After college he met a deaf child named Alice Cogswell who could not hear or speak. He worked with her to teach her how to communicate. Soon after that, he went to Europe where he studied deaf education and learned the miracle of communicating with signs.
Thomas Gallaudet was the first American who understood how the deaf could be taught. In 1816, he brought this knowledge back to America. The signs he learned in Europe were developed into the new language called American Sign Language. Gallaudet helped to found the first free public school for the deaf in the United States. Through education, he helped his students to leave their world of isolation behind them and enter a world of knowing. Just as he knew he would, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet had truly made a difference. Until the end of his life, he continued to work for the cause of the deaf and to defend the rights of other disadvantaged groups.
