Passage A
Have you ever heard of a cow that swims in the ocean? Probably not, but the dugong, also called a sea cow, is a very strange animal. It is the only mammal that lives in the ocean and eats only plants. It moves very slowly, is shy, and feeds on the sea grass. Dugongs live in shallow, warm water near the shore, where there is plenty of light and the waves are not large. Although dugongs are called sea cows, they are not related to cows at all – they are related to elephants. Two things they have in common with elephants are their very long digestive systems and their teeth. Just like elephants the plants dugongs eat wear down their teeth, and new teeth are continually coming from behind to replace the worn ones.
Dugongs are very large and have short flippers, a thick gray-bronze colored skin, and a mouth that is surrounded by coarse hair. They grow tusks, but only mature males and older females have tusks that grow through the skin. Dugongs usually live alone or in groups of two, mostly along the coasts of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The largest population is off the coast of Australia. The female gives birth to one baby every three years and feeds her young until eighteen months of age. The dugong is not an adult until it is at least fourteen years old. Even though they can't defend themselves well, their life expectancy is sixty to seventy years. Sharks, killer whales, and giant crocodiles that live with them don't try to harm them.
Unfortunately many populations of dugongs are decreasing in number and becoming endangered. In the past they were often killed for their meat, hide, and oil, but today their greatest danger is man himself. When a dugong gets caught in a fishing net, it usually drowns because it can only hold its breath for twelve minutes. When the areas where they live and feed are used for housing, recreation, boating, and agriculture, their habitat is polluted or destroyed. There is an effort to protect the population of dugongs off the coast of Australia. Agencies there are working together to stop their decline by prohibiting commercial hunting and protecting their feeding areas and the places they live.

Passage C
Sometimes a person can make a big difference in the lives of others and really change the world. One such person was Sara Josephine Baker. Born in 1873, Sara always wanted to help others who had less than she. One day when she was a little girl, she saw a poor black girl with ragged clothing and no shoes. She felt so bad that she took off her own clothes and gave them to the girl. When she came home without her clothes, her parents were surprised, but they understood what she had done and were proud of her. At the age of sixteen her father and brother both died of typhoid fever, and Sara's life changed. She decided that she would become a doctor even though few medical schools accepted women. Sara was determined, and she became a doctor in 1898. She interned in Boston and then opened her own practice serving poor people in New York City in 1900.
In 1901 Sara took a job as a medical inspector for the city health department, examining school children to check for infections. Many immigrants were living in overcrowded dwellings, and diseases were spreading out of control. Hundreds of people were dying every week, and most of them were babies. Sara worked hard to improve the people's health. In 1907 she became assistant to the Commissioner of Health, and through her efforts the number of babies dying was greatly reduced. In 1908 she started a program of preventative medicine and worked with poor mothers, teaching them how to care for their children and prevent infections. In 1916 she started a program that was the model for today's school lunch program. She set up the Bureau of Child Hygiene, the first such program in the country, which was copied by other agencies throughout the United States.
By the time Sara retired in 1923, clinics all over the country were providing preventative medical care to millions of babies a year. She became a representative to the League of Nations on children's health and was a consultant to the Federal Children's Bureau. In addition to these accomplishments Sara developed a safe way to give eye drops to prevent blindness in newborns, and she invented a baby garment that helped prevent accidental suffocation. Sara organized the first government agency devoted exclusively to children's health and proved that preventative medicine was the key to keeping people from dying of diseases unnecessarily. Sara Josephine Baker devoted her life to improving children's health, and her efforts changed the way medicine was practiced forever.
