Paragraph A: The Bicycle
What machine does not pollute the air, is great for exercise and transportation, and runs on human power? The answer is the bicycle. Without much practice anyone can learn to ride one. The first real bicycle was invented in 1816 by Karl Drais. It had no pedals and was made of two wheels joined by a wooden bar. The rider sat on the bar and moved along by kicking the ground with his feet. In 1839 Kirkpatrick MacMillan built the first bicycle with pedals. Pierre Lallement improved this design in 1866 by inventing a bicycle with wooden rims and pedals attached to the front wheel. It was called the "boneshaker" because it gave the rider such a bumpy ride. A few years later these tires were replaced by steel-rimmed wheels with solid rubber tires. Soon after bicycles were made with large front wheels and small back wheels. These bicycles went fast, but they were difficult to mount and impossible to balance.
Finally bicycle makers went back to using two wheels of equal size to replace the high bicycle. These bicycles were much better and safer than the earlier ones. The rider pushed the pedals to make a chain turn the back wheel. These safe bicycles could go as fast as the big-wheeled ones. Eventually bicycles were built for speed and comfort. Improvements such as air-filled rubber tires, coaster brakes, speed gears, ball bearings and spring saddles increased safety and comfort. Today bicycles continue to be popular all over the world. Bicycles are still used for transportation and delivery work in many crowded cities. Nothing has replaced them for exercise, recreation, and sport.

Paragraph B: A Falling Leaf
Strong winds blowing around and around…
As I start on my journey down to the ground.
Falling through the air on a wild, exciting ride…
Here and there, up and down, and even side to side.
Nothing to hold on to, I slip and I slide…
Nothing to stop me, and nowhere to hide.
It seems that I've landed, the fall was quite hard…
Oh no, here I am in someone's backyard.
The adventure continues, I shiver and shake…
As all of a sudden, along comes a rake.
Is my trip yet complete? It seems that I'm done…
Till the children arrive just looking for fun.
Now I'm piled quite high in a very large mound…
As the children begin to step and to pound.
Crunch and crack, scrunch and whack…
Guess who's been dumped in a black plastic sack?

Paragraph C: Pocahontas
Four hundred years later people still remember the brave, little Indian girl who wanted the English people and the Indians to be friends. Born around 1596 her name was Pocahontas. She was the daughter of a powerful Indian chief, Chief Powhatan. In 1607, when English settlers landed in Jamestown, Virginia, Pocahontas made friends with them. She met John Smith, their leader, and made friends with him, too. Some of the Indians did not like the strangers. Chief Powhatan thought the settlers wanted to take his land from him. One day the Indians captured John Smith and took him to Chief Powhatan to be killed. Pocahontas stopped her father from killing John Smith and saved his life. When the settlers had a fire that destroyed their town, Pocahontas brought them food and saved many lives. One day John Smith was injured and went to England to rest. The Indians were told that he had died. Pocahontas was very sad to think that her friend had died, but the Indians were glad.
New leaders came to Jamestown. They made the settlement strong. Chief Powhatan kept fighting with the settlers. Pocahontas hated the fighting, but she could not stop it. The people of Jamestown wanted to stop Powhatan. They captured Pocahontas and made her a prisoner. They told Chief Powhatan that Pocahontas could go free only if he made peace with the English people, but the chief refused. Pocahontas learned about God and how to dress like an English lady. She was given a new name, Rebecca. In 1614 she married an Englishman named John Rolfe and had a son named Thomas. By then her father decided to make peace. Pocahontas was pleased, but she did not want to come home. She went to England with her husband and son and met the king and queen. While she was there, she learned that John Smith was still alive, and she was very happy. Soon she became very sick and faced death bravely—just as the daughter of a great chief would.
