Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) is often seen as the most widely known and acclaimed American writer of the twentieth century. He won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea, and he received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. It is at times hard to separate Ernest Hemingway the man from Ernest Hemingway the writer. Hemingway was an adventurer; he pursued exotic sports, enjoying bullfighting, deep-sea fishing, and big-game hunting. As a young man he was a newspaper reporter and later a volunteer ambulance driver in Italy in World War I. After suffering a severe knee injury there, he spent the better part of the 1920’s and 1930’s in Paris, then the literary capital of the world.

During these years he honed his craft as a writer. He used his own experiences to develop his writing: his Paris years provided background for his 1926 The Sun Also Rises, and his experiences in Italy offered material for his 1929 A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway was influenced by other expatriate literary figures in Paris; he was often even referred to as a spokesperson for the Lost Generation disillusioned with war and its aftermath. Later Hemingway became a war correspondent during World War II. For a time he did not produce much in the way of literature, but that was emphatically changed by the worldwide success he found on publishing his 1952 The Old Man and the Sea.

Over time Hemingway’s writing has been dissected by a variety of differing literary critics. Many refer to his use of a protagonist who follows a code of conduct in which winning is less important than playing out circumstances with courage and honor while undergoing physical and psychological stresses; Hemingway himself referred to this as “grace under pressure.” Some critics argue that his heroes are clichés. However, most would agree that his unique writing technique was grounded in his early years as a reporter. The style sheet from his newspaper, The Kansas City Star, stressed short sentences, short first paragraphs, positive terminology, and vigorous language. In Hemingway’s writings he held true to much in those directives; his work is known for its spare qualities. His writing is not filled with description; his stories are carried by characters’ actions, thoughts, and dialogue. In his Nobel Prize citation he was lauded for “his powerful style-forming mastery of the art of narration.”

Section C

In the time before white Europeans came to what is now the United States of America, Native Americans who lived here belonged to what are considered to be eight major cultural groups. These were considered as entities based on adaptations to environmental circumstances, and within these groups there were smaller distinct tribes or communities. From the earliest contacts between Native American and European cultures, there was a pattern of the incoming whites’ usurping the lands of the indigenous groups, generally with little thought to compensation for the territories. Over centuries Native American groups were pressured to cede lands to the newcomers and to move farther west across the continent; a combination of treaties and force pushed Indian groups from their homelands into areas less desirable to white settlers. Treaties or guarantees of land and property in exchange for Native American lands were often broken as the new lands became attractive to settlers pushing westward. By the end of the nineteenth century the variety of cultural groups had been assigned to relatively small portions of land, mostly in the western sections of the United States.

While the lands east of the Mississippi River had been home to many Indian nations (some of whom had attempted to adapt to white culture), by the 1840’s only small groups of Native Americans lived there. Even though the Cherokee nation had taken the State of Georgia to the Supreme Court in 1832 to prevent the State from taking tribal lands and even though the court under Chief Justice John Marshall had ruled that Georgia had no authority over Cherokee territory, the US Army forced the tribe to leave the State in 1838. The Federal Government backed this forced march, referred to as the Trail of Tears, of 15,000 Cherokees to unknown lands hundreds of miles away over a several-month period. With little in the way of food and shelter, thousands perished on the trip. In the later nineteenth century a series of treaties and wars resulted in further losses of Indian lives and lands. The discovery of gold in California and later Colorado and other mountain states, the completion of the transcontinental railroad, the whites’ discovery of rich farmlands in the Great Plains, and the decline in the buffalo herds so important to some native groups—all contributed to an ever-shrinking pool of territories and reservations allotted to Indian groups.
