Passage B

The Battle of Borodino on September 7, 1812, was the greatest battle during Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia and along with the “battle of the nations” at Leipzig and Waterloo, one of the most famous. At the village of Borodino, on the main road 77 miles west of Moscow, Marshall Kutuzov, commanding 120,000 Russian troops with 640 pieces of artillery, gave battle to Napoleon’s Grande Armée with 130,000–135,000 men and 587 guns. More than one-third of those on each side were killed or wounded. The battle itself was indecisive, and the Russians withdrew, having lost about 44,000 killed and wounded. But they had begun to inflict a mortal wound on Napoleon’s overextended army, which lost about 50,000.

Kutuzov had retreated from the initial confrontation, but on September 3, his army dug in across a front of 5 miles spanning the only two approaches to Moscow with his right flank protected by the Moskva River and the left by the Mtitasa forest. A great redoubt, or barrier, was constructed in the center. The right and left wings were well fortified and designed to direct any attack into the center, where the bulk of the artillery was situated. Outflanking movements were impossible because of the forest and river. There was nothing deceptive about the Russian position; it was immensely strong, and any sane general would have refused to assault it under normal circumstances. But Kutuzov calculated that after a long advance over scorched earth, Napoleon would be desperate for a decisive battle. The first contact was to the west of the main position, where 40,000 French stumbled on 12,000 Russians on September 5 and were repulsed. The Russians continued to reinforce their positions, and when the French attacked on September 7, seven separate assaults were beaten back at enormous cost before the eighth succeeded because of superior numbers. The Russians fought to the death, and the battle lost any semblance of tactical refinement in an orgy of mutual slaughter. Shaken by the carnage and perhaps suddenly aware of how far he was from home, Napoleon decided not to commit the Imperial Guard. As darkness fell, the fighting petered out through exhaustion. Moreover, the French were stunned as Kutuzov decided to give up Moscow in order to preserve his army.

  1. 32. While indecisive initially the Battle of Borodino saw each side lose of its troops.
  2. 33. The two approaches to Moscow were greatly protected by .

Passage C

Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960) was a folklorist, anthropologist, and novelist. Outspoken, spirited, and very gifted, Hurston was the most prolific African-American writer of the 1930’s. She was born and raised in all-black Eatonville, Florida, the major shaping influence of her affirmative vision of African-American rural folk culture. Inspired as a child by the advice of her dying mother to excel and to be her mother’s voice, she achieved success under the guidance of Franz Boas, a prize-winning folklorist, anthropologist, and writer. Industry, intelligence, ingenuity and the backing of many patrons facilitated her education at Howard University, Barnard College, and Columbia University. When she arrived in New York in 1925, Hurston’s genius for storytelling drama and flamboyance helped her make friends quickly. In addition to Boas the most important person was Fannie Hurst, who employed her as a secretary and confidante. Moreover, much of Hurston’s folklore research in the South, the Bahamas, Haiti, and Jamaica was sponsored by her many friends and acquaintances.

Zora Neale Hurston drew on the tension between her folk and formal education for the ethnic material and manner of the short stories and articles that won her acclaim in the 1920’s and 1930’s. But many black contemporaries of the Harlem renaissance and depression eras criticized her willingness to play the minstrel role for whites, and some criticized her books for being pastoral and totally apolitical. Yet, her most controversial political act was to express opposition to the 1954 Supreme Court school desegregation decision, which she resented for portraying Southern blacks as inferior to whites. This position caused consternation among people who had considered her a spokesperson for blacks in society. She would die in penniless obscurity, and it would be a full decade before her literary revival took place. Literary critics began to reassess Hurston’s significance in the canons of European-American, African-American, and women’s literature. A number of her works, Mules and Men and Tell My Horse, are important resources for the bicultural belief systems and ritual practices of peoples of African descent in the Americas. Hurston’s most commercially successful book was Dust Tracks on a Road, which is a combination of dazzling black idiom and formal rhetoric. Her most critically acclaimed book is Their Eyes Were Watching God, in which the heroine’s quest is the prototypical black love story and account of a woman’s search for identity.
