Paragraph B

The dominant spirit of the 18th century was one of doubt toward all accepted truths and of free inquiry in the pursuit of knowledge. The great philosopher Diderot has held that everything must be examined, everything must be shaken up without exception and completely. The world had to be changed; the dominant notion was that knowledge was power. Thomas Jefferson believed strongly that reason and inquiry would lead away from the false views toward the truths which were inherent in nature. Jefferson was the eternal optimist. He always believed that the future would be better than the past and that freedom would constantly advance. The optimistic faith of the Enlightenment informed all of Jefferson’s work. There was Jefferson the scientist. Jefferson the educator. Jefferson the statesman—all made up the genius of the man. This is exemplified by his work on the decimal system of coinage on the dollar, his land-survey system for the transappalachian West, and his methodically developed plan for a uniform system of weights and measures.

The spirit of the Enlightenment also affected Jefferson’s feelings about the growth of an American nationalism. His Notes on Virginia defined his views, especially those on religious freedom and toleration. Having set forth the fundamental principles of the new nation in the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson was eager to embody those principles in the laws of Virginia. He advocated a whole group of reforms, none more important than the institution of a new order of religious life founded on the principles of absolute religious freedom and separation of church and state. It would take a decade before his goal was achieved, and it would then become a mainstay of the American feeling of unity.

Paragraph C

One wonders why poison ivy produces its toxic juices. Naturalists once thought that it was used as a protective device to prevent herbivorous animals from eating it. This does not appear to be so since the poison has little effect upon the ivy’s natural enemies. Goats, cattle, and sheep eat it without being harmed. The bad reputation of poison ivy stems from its harm to the human skin. Practically all animals are protected by tough hides, feathers or a heavy coat of hair. It seems, however, that the human has a sensitive, thin skin. It is said, for example, that poison ivy rarely affects man’s hair-protected scalp—only his tender skin. In 1833 Japanese scientists studied the toxic agent in this plant. Late in the century Harvard Medical School experimented with poison ivy. In 1940 Dr. Charles Dawson of Columbia University worked on its chemical properties. It was discovered that four complex compounds mix together to form the toxic agent in poison ivy and its near relatives, such as varieties of sumac. An example of a benefit is tannic acid, a material used in making ink and emergency treatment for some types of poisoning.
