Paragraph A

A city of thousands
Pushes me into a corner of no escape…
The void is infinite and
its vastness traps me…
The very space cramps my spirit
and glares at me with empty eyes…
I fear to stay in my hole
But it produces less anxiety than
being free…

The pressure of isolation
Pushes me into my own stomach
And I feel like a pouch carrying
myself inside out…
I am so solitary that my presence
is magnified
And I feel the stares
of no one all around me…

I'm not good alone
Or in a crowd…
Am I a misfit who can't
Pretend to be anything
But what I am?

Why must I be shy?

Paragraph B

Thomas Paine (1737–1809) was born in England of Quaker parents. He had little education and as a young man ran away to sea. He worked at various jobs such as a teacher and preacher. While in England, Benjamin Franklin met Paine and encouraged him to cross the ocean to Philadelphia. Paine expected to open a school in this city, but he instead became the editor of a magazine. He found the job a perfect outlet for his energy. In January, 1776, Paine published his pamphlet "Common Sense." He wrote with clarity, vividness, and eloquence. He expounded the doctrine of social contract. He appealed to those who in the face of wilderness had built their own association of people for safety and mutual support. Paine believed the concept was the basis of true society. In his writing, Paine pointed out, using clear statistics, that Americans were strong enough to become free of England. He also dramatically listed the abuses that had been piled upon the Americans. He fired the sentiment for independence. In December, 1776, when the outbreak of revolutionary enthusiasm began to fade, Paine published the first number of "The American Crisis." "These are the times that try men's souls," became perhaps the most famous exordium a pamphlet ever had. Paine also wrote The Rights of Man and The Age of Reason.

Paragraph C

The man who was to emerge as the most prominent leader of the first successful colonizing expedition to North America was the son of a not very prosperous English yeoman. John Smith had decided to risk all as a soldier of fortune. His chief assets were his daring, his cunning, and his luck. And he was also a bit of a windbag. Early in the voyage to Virginia the colonists decided that they had among themselves a potential tyrant. He constantly harangued the passengers about his exploits against the Turks and the techniques that he had learned from reading Machiavelli's On the Art of War. He offended so many that he actually arrived in Virginia in chains. Ironically, his name was on a list of councilors that was among the secret instructions that were to be read only after landfall. This was not acceptable, and the colonists did not allow him to take the oath of office. Smith was furious at this treatment, but he saw an even greater problem. Immediately the colonists had been blinded by self-interest and specifically their desire for immediate wealth. There was no hope and no work; only the constant grasping for gold moved the colony. As Smith saw it, the colonists did not seem to realize that their pursuit for private wealth would doom the colony. As a result the life of the colony was one of spite and on-going furious battles. The hopes of the colonists and the realities of the situation were not meshed. John Smith understood. He saw a colony hemmed in by Indians with the potential for great destruction. For its salvation there had to be the intercession of a strong-willed man who could impose order. Little by little John Smith would impose his will.
