Paragraph A
Chains seemed to be wrapped
around his ankles
Making his steps clipped and irregular—
It was such a long walk!
Eyes watched as he shuffled down the aisle—
His hands were heavy, moist; they felt numb
like his arms and legs—
The papers in his clutched fingers began to
slip from his grasp—
One, two fell on the floor landing under the
desk—
Giggles rippled through the room—
He felt his cheeks flush—
Bending to pick up the pages, he heard his knees
crack—
More giggles erupted—
Finally, he reached the front of the room—
He turned and faced the rows of grinning,
and, yes, understanding faces—
He let out a sigh—
Steeled himself for the moment of truth—
And with deliberate calm he began to give
his first oral presentation in speech class…

Paragraph B
John Quincy Adams’ wife, Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams, considered herself a prisoner in the President’s mansion. She spent her time writing while her husband enjoyed the political excitement from which women were then banned. She did not like being an outsider and was quick to voice her sentiments. She modeled herself after her late mother-in-law, Abigail Adams, who, in practicing all her duties as wife of a President and as a mother, wanted to convince mankind that the native female mind was as capable of solid achievement and great improvement as that of man. Like her predecessor Louisa Johnson Adams was unhappy in Washington. She had nothing but scorn for politics and public accolades—and particularly for those people who took them so seriously. She strongly believed that women were more open to the possibility of moral perfection because their role in life raised them above the passing pursuits of political life. Her greatest annoyance was that the President rarely consulted her or listened to her wishes. John Quincy Adams loved to swim in the swift currents of the Potomac against his wife’s wishes. On one occasion his boat capsized, and he almost drowned. His wife hoped that it would persuade the President to abandon river swimming, but J. Q. Adams continued a pastime which his wife labeled as another instance of male “silliness.” Ultimately she became so distressed during her White House days that Louisa fled Washington, taking off on her own and roaming up and down the Hudson River Valley and into Vermont. Some have said that she was just trying to assert her individuality. More likely she was fed up with the condescending attitude toward a strong woman in the early nineteenth century. Louisa is an important figure as a sharp observer of the life she was prevented from enjoying by her gender and by society’s prejudices.

Milton Hershey was born September 13, 1857, in Pennsylvania. When he was fourteen years old, he became an apprentice in a printing firm that published a newspaper in German and English. Hershey was fired because he dropped his hat into a press. Next he learned candy making in an ice-cream parlor located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He worked there for six years. In 1876 Hershey started his own candy factory in Philadelphia. Every night he would work in the basement making penny candy. Hershey’s business grew, but he found that the small stores that he now supplied were slow in paying. In 1882 he sold his business and moved to Colorado. He had trouble finding work so he moved to Chicago, where he started a candy-making business with his father. They went broke. Hershey had no better luck in New Orleans. Arriving in New York, he got a job with a major candy manufacturer. During the day he worked for Huyler’s Candy Company, and every night he made taffy and cough drops in his boardinghouse and then peddled his candy on the street. During this time he underwent hardships. Hershey had trouble getting credit. He had an accident and lost his supply of candy. Then he was robbed. With only the clothes on his back, he went home to Lancaster. There he started to make caramels and chocolate bars. This was when Milton Hershey’s luck changed. His business blossomed. Needing more space to make his chocolates, he founded the town in Pennsylvania which is now his famous landmark.
