Passage B
Winston Churchill had contact with Franklin Roosevelt from the moment he became the British Prime Minister in May, 1940. Roosevelt had realized, where the American public and Congress had not, that Britain was important to the defense of the United States. When France was defeated, Britain stood along, and the rumbles of war with Japan were getting louder. After being elected to his third presidential term in November, 1940, FDR instigated the Lend-Lease Act to help Britain in its struggle. When Hitler invaded Russia in the summer of 1941, both Roosevelt and Churchill extended an offer of aid to Stalin, which continued throughout the war.
In 1944 the allies in the West had just endured Hitler’s last major offensive in an attempt to hold off the American and British forces, but it failed. The conference at Yalta confirmed decisions that were made regarding Eastern Europe at the Teheran Conference of 1943. It was agreed that the Russians would have influence in Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary. Also, the Baltic States and Poland would be under Russian influence, while the British would have control in Greece. The Yalta Conference is often cited as the beginning of the Cold War. The meeting of the Big Three at the former palace of Czar Nicholas on the Crimean southern shore of the Black Sea took place February 4–11, 1945. Stalin’s army had reached the Oder River and was poised for the final attack on Berlin. The Germans were in full retreat on every front. The Russians possessed the largest army in Europe, 12 million soldiers in 300 divisions. General Eisenhower’s 4 million men in 85 divisions were still west of the Rhine River. Strategic bombing had devastated German cities, and the last untouched major city in Germany would be destroyed on February 13 when Churchill sent his bombers over Dresden.
The partition of Germany at the end of the war led to a new European map. The buffer zone created by Russia between itself and the West would later be known as the Iron Curtain. At Yalta Stalin pledged to join the Allies against Japan once Germany had been totally defeated. Yalta would be the last time that the three leaders would meet together. With the death of President Roosevelt on April 12, 1945, the next meeting at Potsdam would have President Truman representing the United States. Winston Churchill would lose the general election in 1945, and a new prime minister would return to the conference table at Potsdam.

Passage C
Salvador Dali was born the son of a prestigious notary in the small town of Figuera in Northern Spain. His talents as an artist showed at an early age when he received his first drawing lessons at the age of ten. Later Dali began to study at the Royal Academy of Art in Madrid. He was expelled twice because of his argumentative attitude, and he never took final examinations. His opinion was that he was more qualified than those who were to examine him.
In 1928 Dali went to Paris, where he met the Spanish painters Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. He established himself as the principal figure of a group of surrealist artists. By 1929 Dali had found his personal style that would make him famous—the world of the unconscious that is recalled during our dreams. The surrealist theory is based on the theories of Sigmund Freud. Recurring images of historical occurrences and the famous melting watches became the artist’s surrealist trademarks. His great craftsmanship allowed him to execute his paintings in a nearly photorealistic style. His paintings showed his great admiration for the Italian renaissance painter Raphael.
In 1933 Salvador Dali had his first one-man show in New York and a year later visited the United States, having been given a loan by Pablo Picasso. To evade World War II, Dali chose the United States as his permanent residence in 1940. He had a series of spectacular exhibitions, particularly at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Besides creating a number of great paintings, Dali became a favorite of American high society. Celebrities like Helena Rubinstein and Alfred Hitchcock gave him commissions for portraits. His art works became a popular trademark, and he diversified his activities into jewelry and clothing design and even film-making.
In the late 1940’s Dali developed a lively interest in science, religion, and history. He integrated things into his art that he had picked up from popular science magazines. He was also inspired by the great classical masters of painting like Botticelli and Velasquez. In 1958 the artist began his series of large-sized history paintings. He painted one monumental painting every year during the summer months in Spain. The most famous one, “The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus,” can be seen at the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The artist’s late art works combine more than ever his perfect and meticulous painting technique with his fantastic and limitless imagination.
