Paragraph B
Horatio Nelson (1758–1805) joined the Royal Navy at the age of twelve and came into prominence from the beginning of the wars against France (1793–1815). He distinguished himself at the siege of Calvi in Corsica. At the Battle of St. Vincent (Feb. 14, 1797) his initiative in turning his forces to prevent two parts of the enemy force from joining contributed greatly to his success and reputation. He lost his right arm in 1798 in an attack on Tenerife. By now a Rear Admiral he was sent in pursuit of the French expedition to Egypt and caught up with the enemy fleet and destroyed it in a daring night attack (Battle of the Nile, Aug. 1, 1798). His renown grew, and this was the first great victory of the European coalition against Napoleon. It was, however, in the campaign of 1805 that he demonstrated his prowess to the full. He first pursued the French fleet from Toulon to the West Indies and back before blockading it at Cadiz and destroying it at Trafalgar (Oct. 21, 1805). Here is where he met his death.
Britain then provided a magnificent funeral for the man already considered her greatest sailor. Nelson, who had a remarkable command of strategy, was also an astute tactician. He managed to free himself totally from the formalism of the eighteenth century’s limited warfare to fight battles of destruction. His innovation in naval warfare for attacking in two columns remained a model into the twentieth century. Nelson also showed a tremendous feeling for the importance of friendship and comradeship. He managed to create such remarkable harmony and loyalty among his captains that they came to be known as the “band of brothers.” Moreover, his great victory at Trafalgar was seen as a turning point in the wars against Napoleon.

Paragraph C
The first space flights began with a Russian vehicle in 1957. “Sputnik I” went into orbit in that year. It was the first man-made satellite to join the moon in its journey around earth. The Soviet Union had constructed it and had assembled the enormously powerful rocket which shot it into space beyond effective reach of the earth’s gravity. The Soviet Union also had given it that pleasant name meaning companion or fellowtraveller. Within a week it had become part of every language in the world. “Sputnik I” travelled around the earth many times before gravity claimed it, and it burst into flames re-entering the atmosphere. It had till then travelled an orbit just far enough out for the centrifugal force dragging it off into space to be balanced by the slight force of gravity at that distance.
Four years later, in 1961, Yury Gagarin was the first man sent into orbit—the first human being to achieve a visit to the outer regions beyond reach of gravity or human aid. The flight lasted an hour and forty-eight minutes. Ten months after Gagarin’s flight the American John Glenn on February 20, 1962, made three orbits around the earth. This must have seemed the easy part. In Glenn’s case the delay, the postponements of the flight, were enough to have shattered the confidence of a lesser man. Suborbital flights had already been made in May and July of 1961, and Glenn’s flight was scheduled for December of that year. It was then postponed no fewer than ten times as a result of weather conditions and technical hitches. On several occasions he lay strapped into his capsule on the launching pad at Cape Canaveral before learning that the launch had been cancelled. Eventually, three hours after he had been closed into his capsule for an eleventh time, he was blasted off.
John Glenn’s flight lasted four hours and fifty-six minutes. He had covered 81,000 miles at altitudes between ninety-nine and a hundred and sixty-two miles before “Friendship Seven” dropped into the sea off Puerto Rico and was picked up by a destroyer. The trip had been successful. Two things, however, went wrong and were rectified. The first was that the hydrogen peroxide jets for controlling the capsule’s balance behaved erratically. Glenn took over manual control to let “Friendship Seven” complete its third and final orbit. Secondly, a faulty mechanism signaled to earth that the heat shield, which was to prevent the capsule from overheating during its descent, had become detached. The information was wrong; the descent worked smoothly.
