In his early years, Arthur Miller did not offer an indication that he would become one of America’s premiere playwrights. Born in 1915, Miller was an adolescent when the Great Depression disrupted his family’s finances. He did graduate from high school (after flunking a math class three times) and worked at a number of jobs, many involving manual labor. While working in a warehouse, he read The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevski, and it altered the course of his life. Many see the book as offering a philosophical questioning of human existence; however, it inspired Miller to dream of becoming a writer.

Hindered by his poor academic record and financial difficulties, Miller spent two years before the University of Michigan would conditionally accept him. Once there he began to write and to win awards for his work; he also managed to graduate in four years. In 1938 his 1936 play, The Grass Still Grows, won the Theater Guild National Award, giving him national recognition. Although the first Broadway production of one of his plays in 1944 lasted only four performances, it further established his reputation. By the late 1940’s, Miller received solid critical success; he won the New York Drama Critics’ Award for All My Sons in 1947 and for Death of a Salesman in 1949. Later he won a Pulitzer Prize for that play as well. He won a Tony Award for The Crucible in 1953 and a Gold Medal Award for Drama in 1955 for A View from the Bridge. Miller won other awards over his career; also, he wrote other plays as well as novels, movie scripts, articles, and essays.

Not all of his works were uniformly praised and accepted. The Crucible, which he wrote in the early 1950’s using material that he had researched in his college days, stirred quite a bit of controversy. The play is based on the Salem witch trials of 1692, when nineteen people (along with two dogs) were hanged after being accused of witchcraft. Many people saw the play and its presentation of mass hysteria and paranoia as too closely reminiscent of the McCarthy anti-Communist hearings of 1950 to 1954. Senator Joseph McCarthy held hearings in which many innocent people were accused of being Communists or traitors without evidence to back up these claims. Those called to testify were encouraged to name others as Communists. While McCarthy’s tactics fell out of favor, Miller was actually called before a Congressional committee in 1956 to testify about attending Communist meetings.

Section B

I have a math test and two chemistry labs;
I have a history paper due.
And when I’ll begin to work,
I haven’t got a clue.

Procrastination seems to sit
At the center of my soul.
I’ll change my ways,
Dedication will be my goal.

Okay, I’m in my room
I think I’m ready to go.
The inspiration to dig right in
Leaves once I see my laptop glow.

Do I have new email?
I’ll just have to check.
Just a quick look,
I shouldn’t, but what the heck!

Okay, two hours later,
Where did the time go?
I still haven’t studied,
And it’s time for my favorite show.

Only an hour,
Almost nothing at all.
The TV is beckoning;
I answer its call.

Now, I’ll really get going,
But where do I start?
The labs are like monsters,
Do I have to finish each part?

My stomach is rumbling
I really must eat.
It won’t take me long
Till I’m back in my seat.

Ah! It’s great to feel full.
I’ll look at my work now,
The paper or test?
I will start, but how?

If I lie on my bed,
I can really type fast.
I start my paper,
But I really don’t last.

RRRRINNNGG!
What? It’s morning? Oh, no!
No paper, no problems, no labs!
I worked so hard and have nothing to show.

During the Cold War following World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union were engaging in an arms race, stockpiling nuclear bombs and missiles. This race gave birth to the space race after the Soviets launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, into orbit around the earth in 1957. America was shocked. If the Soviets could launch a satellite into space, could they launch a nuclear rocket that would reach the United States? Also, the US did not want the Soviet Union to control space. America scrambled to launch its own satellites and to develop new weapons systems. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, was set up to develop a space program that could compete with the USSR. The pressure was on as the Soviets put a man, Yury Gagarin, into space in 1961. American President John F. Kennedy made a speech in which he promised that the US would put a man on the moon “before the decade is out.” In 1969 the United States made good on this promise.

The Americans achieved their goal with a huge communal effort. Thousands of scientists as well as military and civilian personnel worked toward this achievement. In an early phase, Mercury missions, named after the classic messenger of the gods, attempted to take flight into space. Six flights lasted from 15 minutes to 34 hours. The next phase was named Gemini after the twin stars. These capsules were designed to accommodate two men; they were bigger and could be steered by a pilot. Huge accomplishments at this stage were the development of docking techniques in space and the first trips for astronauts outside their capsule.

Five months before the end of the decade of the 1960’s a thirty-story rocket was ready to lift off to fulfill Kennedy’s promise. Three men in the Apollo 11 capsule on top of the rocket would travel to the moon. An American would be the first to set foot on it. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon and planted a US flag there. Millions of people around the world were mesmerized by his feat. Even today many people know the words that he spoke, “one small step for man, one giant step for mankind.”
