IELTS Academic Reading 13 câu hỏi

Cách làm bài

Đoạn nào chứa thông tin (which paragraph)

  • Tuân thủ giới hạn số từ của đề (ví dụ “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS”).

Chung

  • Không đọc kỹ toàn bài trước — đọc lướt lấy ý, rồi dùng câu hỏi dẫn đường (scan/skim).
  • Quản lý thời gian: mỗi bài đọc ~20 phút. Câu khó thì đánh dấu, làm tiếp rồi quay lại.

Success of Bluetooth Wireless Technology

A. It was born amid a blaze of hype at the height of the dot-com boom, but initially failed to thrive. Early versions suffered from compatibility problems; a high-profile demonstration at a 2001 trade show failed to work. While Bluetooth struggled despite all the hype, another wireless technology, Wi-Fi, took off on its own. Obituaries for Bluetooth appeared frequently in the tech press: "Bluetooth is in full retreat," declared an Intel executive in 2001; "Bluetooth is dead," said a Farpoint Group analyst in 2003. Other analysts issued similar verdicts.

B. But reports of the death of Bluetooth proved premature: today it is in rude health. Sales of Bluetooth devices more than doubled in 2005 to reach 320 million units, and were expected to exceed 520 million the following year—far outstripping sales of Wi-Fi chips. Around one in four mobile phones sold then supported Bluetooth.

C. After years of insisting Bluetooth was more than just a way to link a wireless headset to a mobile phone, its backers were vindicated as other uses emerged. In the previous year, about 60% of Bluetooth chips went into handsets and 15% into headsets, but the other 25% went into a wide variety of devices—from laptops, keyboards and mice to Bluetooth-enabled clothing.

D. This success, after its rocky start, was due to a combination of factors. In many countries, new legislation banned the use of mobile phones without a hands-free kit while driving, boosting sales of Bluetooth headsets. Carmakers, led by Audi, began incorporating microphones and speakers capable of connecting to handsets via Bluetooth. As consumers became more aware and started asking for it, handset-makers included Bluetooth to differentiate their products and lift margins. Adding a Bluetooth chip to a phone cost around $2—down from $20 in 2001—yet allowed manufacturers to raise prices by much more and to sell high-margin accessories. Mobile operators also offered Bluetooth headsets (often end-of-line stock costing very little) as incentives to new customers.

E. Greater adoption, in turn, cleared the way for inclusion in all kinds of new products. Beyond jackets, motorcycle helmets and sunglasses with built-in headsets, controllers for two next-generation video-game consoles—Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii—would use Bluetooth. Because Bluetooth is an industry standard, console-makers could buy chips and software off the shelf, faster and cheaper than inventing proprietary alternatives. Other applications included stereo wireless headphones for MP3 players—Apple was rumoured to be working on a Bluetooth iPod—and connecting MP3 players to in-car stereos via Bluetooth. "Bluecasting," the beaming of information to handsets from Bluetooth-enabled posters, also became feasible as more consumers carried Bluetooth-capable phones.

F. In March, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (the not-for-profit body that promotes the technology) announced that version 3.0 would be based on ultra-wideband radio, enabling data-transfer rates hundreds of times faster than before. This, said a leading chipmaker, would open up completely new application areas from 2008—for example, transferring music to MP3 players, or beaming photos or video from digital cameras to televisions, without wires.

G. All this offers a lesson about standards wars. They are often portrayed as "winner-take-all" contests in which only one victor can emerge—great for headlines, but rarely accurate. Supposed rivals often end up coexisting and serving different needs, as with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. "We see them as complementary—they do different things," said one executive. Although declarations of Bluetooth's demise have faded, predictions that other technologies are doomed persist: some argue Wi-Fi and WiMAX fatally undermine the case for third-generation (3G) mobile networks; ever more elaborate smartphones are touted as "iPod killers" or "BlackBerry killers"; and software-as-a-service delivered by subscription will wipe out traditional software. The lesson of Bluetooth's quiet success is that such predictions deserve a grain of salt. In many cases, coexistence is more likely than outright victory for any single approach—horses for courses.
