Past simple (Quá khứ đơn)
Hình thức: động từ thêm -ed (regular) hoặc dạng V2 (irregular). Phủ định dùng didn't + V, câu hỏi dùng Did + S + V?
Cách dùng: nói về hành động đã hoàn tất trong quá khứ, thói quen/hành động lặp lại đã qua, và các sự kiện chính trong câu chuyện. Dấu hiệu: yesterday, last week/year, in 2001, ... ago.
Ví dụ: I saw the film yesterday.
Past continuous (Quá khứ tiếp diễn)
Hình thức: was/were + V-ing (I/he/she/it → was; you/we/they → were).
Cách dùng: hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm quá khứ, hai hành động song song, hoặc bối cảnh câu chuyện. Dấu hiệu: at that moment, while. Khi một hành động ngắn xen vào: The phone rang while I was watching TV.
used to
Hình thức: used to + V (nguyên thể); phủ định didn't use to / never used to; câu hỏi Did ... use to ...?
Cách dùng: nói về thói quen hoặc trạng thái trong quá khứ xa mà nay không còn nữa. Ví dụ: When I was four, I used to eat ice cream every day.

The past continuous is often used with the following words and phrases: • at that moment • at one/two/etc o'clock • while |

• When one action in the past happens in the middle of another, we use the past simple and the past continuous together.
✓ The phone rang while I was watching a DVD.
• We do not use the past continuous for regular or repeated actions in the past.
✗ Last year, I was going to the cinema every weekend.

Amber's Big Match
