Hiện tại đơn (Present simple)

Dùng cho: thói quen, sự thật hiển nhiên, tình huống lâu dàitrạng thái. Ngôi he/she/it thêm -s/-es; phủ định/câu hỏi dùng do/does.

Dấu hiệu nhận biết: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never; every day/week, once a week… (trạng từ tần suất đứng trước động từ thường, nhưng đứng sau động từ be).

Hiện tại tiếp diễn (Present continuous)

Dùng cho: việc đang xảy ra lúc nói, tình huống tạm thời, và thói quen gây khó chịu (thường đi với always). Cấu trúc: am/is/are + V-ing.

Dấu hiệu: now, right now, at the moment, today, this week…

Động từ chỉ trạng thái (Stative verbs)

Các động từ chỉ cảm xúc/suy nghĩ như like, love, hate, know, believe, want, need, prefer, seem, understand… thường KHÔNG dùng ở thì tiếp diễn (✓ I like it / ✗ I am liking it).

Lưu ý: vài động từ (be, have, think) vẫn dùng tiếp diễn khi diễn tả hành động: “I’m thinking about the match.”

Helpful hints
The present simple is often used with the following words and phrases:
adverbs
• always • usually • often
• sometimes • rarely • never
phrases
• every Monday/week/etc
• each Monday/week/etc
• once/twice a week/month/etc
• three times a week/month/etc
Remember that these adverbs usually go before the verb, but after the verb be.
• I often play football with my friends.
• I am often late for my piano lessons.

The present continuous is often used with the following words and phrases:
• now • right now • at the moment
• today • this week/month/etc

Stative verbs

Stative verbs do not usually describe actions. They describe states (feelings, thoughts, etc). They are not normally used in continuous tenses.
✓ I like reading books in my free time.
✗ I am liking reading books in my free time.
Some common stative verbs: appear, be, believe, belong to, hate, have, include, know, like, love, need, prefer, see, seem, taste, think, understand, want.
Watch out! Some of these verbs (such as be, have and think) are used in continuous tenses when they describe actions.
✓ What do you think about his new song?
✓ I’m thinking about last night’s match.

One game I am loving is backgammon.You are throwing the dice and then you move your pieces around the board. It is seeming quite easy, but in fact you are needing to be quite careful.
